In the 20s and 30s the initiative of some producers towards the establishment of a coordinating body started, but only in 1963 (the same year in which in Italy the first systematic legislation on the designations of origin of wines, the Decree of the President of the Republic nr.930, was enacted) the Voluntary Consortium for the Protection of Marsala wine was founded by a group of enlightened entrepreneurs who combined their forces to safeguard the millenarian tradition of the Marsala wine and to protect its identity.
In these forty years, the Consortium has been representing a reliable point of reference for manufacturers, contributing actively to the development of the quality and image of Marsala.
Today, the great commitment has led to two results of considerable importance: while the Marsala wine enters fully to become part of the exclusive elite of the protected by the European Union typical products (for the presentation of the product in the it label does not require any additional wording: Marsala and no more), with the Decree of 13th February 2003, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry approved the new Statute of the Consortium, giving it the task to perform the functions of protection, enhancement and general care of the interests relating to the Marsala DOC: of which the Consortium has become, in this way, the only entity manager, as well as proponent to the public administration, in accordance with paragraph 1 of article nr.19 of the Law nr.164/92.
