Azienda Agricola Cataldi Madonna is located in the valley of Ofena (AQ) at 520 meters above sea level. It works on a wine–growing area of 26.5 hectares of property, in addition to seven hectares of olive trees and some small plots of arable land.
The ground of limestone and clay, basically more melted in the plain and more rich in structure in the high parts on the mountain. The total annual production is of 230,000 bottles.
The wine of the reference is Ton, a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo produced from a selection of grapes coming exclusively from the Cona vineyard. It spends 12 months in French barriques and another 24 months in bottle before being issued on the market. About 7000 bottles per year are produced. It is a modern wine, faithful to its territory.
From grapes of the same vineyard Pi delle Vigne, Montepulciano Cerasuolo, is obtained. It is produced with one of the traditional techniques of Abruzzo, the “svacata”, which consists in the white vinification of part of the grapes (85%), to which the remaining part, vinified with a normal maceration on the skins but half fermented, is added (up to 12 Babo). At that point fermentation is brought to an end. The secret to the success of this wine–making technique lies in the times of blending.
