The Consortium was founded in 1992 to protect the Morellino di Scansano Wine which can now count on 26 members companies, in addition to the approximately 150 members producers of DOC grapes that give their grapes to the Morellino di Scansano Cooperative Winery.
The goal of the Consortium is to give an address to the wine policy of the territory, to ensure quality through the specification of production and to enhance the product on the market.
By the decree of 28th December 2000, published in Gazzetta Ufficiale No.18 of 23rd January 2001, the Consortium was appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, "to perform the functions of protection, enhancement, general care of the interests relating to the above mentioned designation of origin, as well as of proposal and consultation in respect of the public administration, pursuant to the Article no.19, paragraph no.1 of the Law of 10th February 1992 No.164".
