The Union of Veneto DOC Wines Consortia is the representative body of the wine sector with a designation of controlled origin of the Veneto region and plays an essential coordination through Consortia, on the activity of control and supervision over the production and marketing of wines from Veneto with D.O.C. and D.O.C.G. mark, also to fight abuse and fraud against designations of origin and Consortia’s trademarks. A protection that passes through the warranty on the traceability of the wines and their production using traditional methods.
Not only, UViVe has the task of representing all the Consortia of Protection of Veneto in relation with the institutional level with the Region, the Ministry of Agricultural Policies, the bodies of the European Union for what regards the wine sector and, especially, for coordinating and proposing changes and improvements in the complex legislation. Not to forget, the constant activity of the consortia members updated on the latest novelties in the legislative field. Added to this is the constant commitment to research in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
UViVe is the "ambassador" of Veneto wines in the world, as a coordinator and organizer, in Italy and abroad, of collective initiatives for the dissemination and strengthening of the image of Veneto wines with D.O.C. and D.O.C.G. wines. Thanks to the Union, consortia can reach and be present at the most important events in every corner of the planet. From the great fairs of international promotion campaigns, from themed exhibitions to events over which the attention of the whole world is focused, the Veneto wines can rely on the organization of UViVe to reach even the most distant markets.
The Consortium for the Protection of Prosecco DOC was founded in 2009, following a small revolution that affected one of the top wines of Italian oenology. Prosecco produced in the Conegliano – Valdobbiadene area obtained the DOCG recognition, reflecting the quality and the historicity of a unique wine, starting from the link with the territory. At that point it has become necessary to protect the denomination of origin of the Prosecco wine produced historically between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, protecting it from the competitors and the risk of counterfeiting. Hence the change of the denominaiton of the Prosecco DOC, that no longer refers to the vine, which could be produced all over the world, but to wine.
The new name of the grape, therefore, is Glera, while only the wine produced in the DOC area may bear the name of Prosecco.
The production area consists of nine provinces in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia: Treviso, Padua, Venice, Vicenza, Belluno, Pordenone, Gorizia, Trieste, Udine, therefore making of it the largest Italian DOC for territorial extension.
The new DOC, therefore, encompasses and replaces the existing IGT (Prosecco Colli Trevigiani, Prosecco Marca Trevigiana, Prosecco del Veneto, Prosecco Alto Livenza, Prosecco delle Venezie) in a single territory. The designation also provides the possibility to specify the area of origin of the grapes for the provinces of Treviso and Trieste.
Forty–eight members to over 6,000 wine companies and 930,000 hectoliters of wine produced only in 2009: with these numbers the new Prosecco DOC Consortium aims to challenge the international market, relying on the notoriety and the quality of a wine that does not fear competitors. The official logo is a kind of sun that with the rotation of 9 glasses stands for the only nine provinces where the Prosecco DOC can be produced.
A significant choice of the producers that joined Consortium is the decision to adopt the State flag, the band compulsory only for the DOCG: a voluntary choice that indicates the intention to further protect the quality of the product, certified by the alphanumeric identification code with which you can track the whole supply chain and combat fakes. The ministerial band is applied to bottles on the market from 1st August 2011.
The Venice Wines Consortium was founded in 2011 by the fusion of the Voluntary Consortium for the Protection of the Lison Pramaggiore DOC Wines and the Consortium for the Protection of the Piave DOC Wines with the aim to protect and enhance the Designations of Controlled Origin that stretch in the hinterland of Venice, between the provinces of Treviso and Venice.
The Venice Wine Consortium protects 44 DOC and 2 DOCG wines, one white, Lison, and one red, Malanotte del Piave (which will be officially launched on 1st November this year), bringing together over 4,000 producers in the provinces of Pordenone, Treviso and Venice. An area naturally and historically suited to wine–growing, currently among the most important and advanced in Italy.
Numerous testimonies attest that in the plains of the provinces of Treviso and Venice there were vineyards owned by the Doges, and local wines of the Venetian Republic were produced. Literature also shows evidence of sending of Venetian wines to the courts of Poland, of Emperor Otto and of Charlemagne. The quality of these wines, then, was already well known in ancient times.
Torchiato di Fregona is a "raisin" wine with a very peculiar story.
The place of birth and the rituality of production make it a valuable monument to the richness of our biodiversity in the wine world.
Torchiato has a succession of flavors, from sweet to dry, which fascinate and enchant.
It is produced by thirteen companies, mostly family run, gathered in a Consortium. In this agricultural structure, the places devoted to withering (barns and attics) and to the maturation of the grapes are still located in family houses.
Together, the farmers of the Consortium intend to promote, preserve and protect this cultural heritage, and at the same time to use modern knowledge to ensure the genuineness of Torchiato.
The Doc Merlara is one of the most vivid designations of the Veneto region, with the production of unique and modern wines. It is characterized by wine–growing area in rapid growth, which now has about 500 hectares of vineyards, of which about 400 are connected to the winery of Merlara, a structure of transformation associated with the of Colognola Winery, then inserted into the Collis group and, as such, able to enhance its productions throughout the world.
The unification of the Colognola Winery has marked the return of a successful winemaking in the area of Merlara: the desire to overcome the crisis and to compete as protagonists at high levels has led all the forces in the field to join in order to achieve satisfactory results in the present and to be able to meet future challenges. New retail space, a modern winemaking facility, then the best wines, the most valuable and best paid, brought new confidence and prospects for businesses.
The DOC was approved by Presidential Decree of 13th July 2000 and on 26th January 2001 the respective Consortium of Protection was established, with the task to perform supervisory functions in respect of its members. Following major investments in the field of wine making and fining, made in the last decade by the interested wineries and, above all, thanks to a more qualified the technical management of the vineyards, remarkable levels both in the quality of the grapes and in that of wines have been achieved.
For this reason, in December 2008, they approved also the change of the product specification of the Doc Merlara, which introduces substantial changes and new types to better adapt to the market. The Consortium for the Protection of the Merlara DOC Wines is celebrating at this time its first ten years of life, characterized by a remarkable dynamism aimed at informing all interested parties on the evolution of the designation and on the amendment to the product specification, to make know the characteristics of quality wines produced in this area and to stimulate the search for new markets.
The Corti Benedettine Denomination of Controlled Origin of the Padua area has obtained the recognition in June 2004.
As stated in its product specification, it extends in the south – east area of the province of Padua and in the southern part of the province of Venice , occupying the territory which for over 700 years, from the twelfth to the beginning of the nineteenth century, knew the presence and the work of the monks of the Santa Giustina Benedictine Abbey in Padua.
Corti Benedettine were the administrative, economic and social center of the extended properties that, under the guidance of the monks, provided to local development through land reclamation, embankments of rivers, construction of farm buildings and soil working. The cultivation of the vine, already known in Roman times, is widespread in the territory, and the wine produced in the large cellars of the Corti became one of the main products of trade with the cities of Padua and Venice: this latter will widely market it in all Mediterranean ports.
This centuries–old experience revives today in the vineyards and in the cellars of this part of the Veneto region where, next to the historical and indigenous grape varieties, Raboso, Refosco, Tocai, Moscato, they cultivate those so–called international varieties, who have found here excellent conditions of climate and soil: Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.
They produce wines that can be consumed young and where the freshness accompanied by intense floral notes can be appreciated; others are suitable to the medium or long periods of aging, so as to enhance at the nose and the mouth greater aromatic complexity and an elegant structure, together with a good softness.
The Montello and the Asolo Hills are a hilly area full of charm and history, mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy, whose wines are promoted by the Consortium.
After a sophisticated experimental work, a vine variety resistant to drought has been obtained, so increasing the level of maturity and the sugar content of grapes.
The production area covers the whole territory of Monfumo and part of the municipalities of Asolo, Caerano di San Marco, Castelcucco, Cavaso del Tomba, Cornuda, Crocetta del Montello, Fonte, Giavera del Montello, Maser, Montebelluna, Nervesa della Battaglia, Paderno del Grappa, Pederobba, Possagno, San Zeno degli Ezzelini, Volpago del Montello.
The Colli di Conegliano designatin, without further qualification, according to the specifications is reserved to the white wine that comes from a blend composed of Manzoni Bianco (min 30%), Pinot Bianco and/or Chardonnay (min 30%), Sauvignon and/or Riesling Renano (max 10%). Colli di Conegliano Rosso comes from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Marzemino, for not less than 10%, Merlot in any case can not exceed 40%. Torchiato di Fregona is produced with Verdiso grapes (min 30%), Prosecco grapes (min 30%), Boschera grapes (min 25%). The Boschera vine is cultivated only in the area of Fregona, cold–resistant, and its production is scarce. Clusters are sparse and slightly reddened.
The area of production of the Colli di Conegliano D.O.C. wines includes entirely or in part the territory of twenty Municipalities in the high hills of the Treviso area: Conegliano, Susegana, Pieve di Soligo, Farra di Soligo, Refrontolo, san Pietro di Feletto, Miane, Follina, Cison di Valmarino, Revine Lago, Tarzo, Vittorio Veneto, Fregona, Sarmede, Cappella Maggiore, Cordignano, Colle Umberto, San Fior, San Vendemiano, Vidor.
This area has always been a place of research and production of important wines: the reference, here, is to those wines which, although different, were equalized with the Ministerial Decree of 3rd August 1993, under the same Colli di Conegliano Designation of Controlled Origin: Bianco, Rosso, Refrontolo Passito, Torchiato di Fregona. For all wines produced with this designation, care starts the vineyard: the choice of the most favorable terrain, with high density of planting, unexpanded breeding forms of vineyards, modest yields of grapes per vine.
Founded in 1990 as a supervision, protection and promotion institute, the Consortium for the Protection of Lugana performs a systematic and intense activity for the protection and enhancement of the designation of origin.
The Consortium for the Protection is also promoter of communication and enhancement of the Lugana brand through the participation in the most important national and international fairs and the organization of events designed to raise awareness of the image and the quality of Lugana.
The Consortium is also responsible for safeguarding the Lugana from unfair competition and market fluctuations.
In this regard, the Consortium has long waged a battle against the temptation, in a time of crisis like the one that is gripping the world today, of "falling prices" that would undermine the quality of the product and debase the image of the designation.
Founded in 1967, the "Lugana" designation of controlled origin was the first recognized in Lombardy and one of the first in Italy, reflecting the historical and inseparable bond between this white wine and its territory.
Campagne De Vilmont is a line of champagne of Vinicola Serena, result of the purchase of the Maison De Vilmont in France situated in the famous Montagne de Reims within the prestigious area of the Premiere Cru in Rilly la Montagne.
The producers of the areas of D.O.C. Colli Berici (since 1982) and Vicenza (since 2000) have come together in the Volunteer Consortia for the Protection of DOC wines which have as its main aim to protect, promote and represent the interests related to the DOC.
Until now, both consortia have acted and worked with organizational structures and autonomous directional organogrammas, sharing the operating and exhibition spaces of the Palace of Wine (Palazzo Pisani) of Lonigo (Vicenza), together with the Wine Route of the Berici Hills.
In view of the significant innovative regulations introduced by the Legislative Decree on April 8th, 2010, n° 61, and given the substantial role attributed to the new Consortia for the protection of designations of origin, the governing bodies of the Consortium for the protection of the Colli Berici DOC wines and the Consortium for the protection of the Vicenza DOC wines have started a process of actual melting of the two existing consortia in order to form a single relevant one, which meets the requirements of the Ministerial Decree of December 16th, 2010, in addition to what is stated in the Legislative Decree n°61/2010. In this way, the activity of the consortium for the protection and enhancement of the designations should be more efficient and effective, allowing to concentrate more resources for strategic actions.
This form of aggregation should also bring:
the growth in size of the structure resulting in a more advantageous bargaining position;
a rationalization of the resources used with consequent efficiency gains and savings in general and administrative costs;
the strengthening of the organizational structure and the integration of the services offered.
Interventions, which thanks to the large number of members and their consequent weight may increasingly move towards a vision of a best business–entrepreneurial vision, that allows timely decisions to safeguard effectively the local products, as well as efficiently promoting both at national and international level the wine produced and protected, at the same time clears the field from unproductive constraints and reasons.
Today, the Consortium for the Protection of the Colli Berici and Vicenza is the new organizational reality. It represents about 60% of the wine production in Vicenza, bringing together and representing both private companies and cooperatives, aiming to become more and more a strategic technical and promotional point of reference for important and prestigious wineries in the province.
The objectives of the new Consortium are:
to enhance the protected designations giving them a distinctive identity, that will result in a productive and economic value;
to promote the knowledge of the designations and to increase their competitiveness in the market;
to broaden the shareholder base and to increase the number of services offered to members (training, workshops, incoming of industry operators etc.).
The foothills of Vicenza have always been a land of great wine–growing tradition and since 1969 boasts the Breganze Designation of Controlled Origin, the first in the Vicenza area.
It comprises the hills and the next plains included in the three valleys of the rivers Astico and Brenta; of this area Breganze is almost the geographic center, while the other cornerstones are Thiene to the West and Bassano del Grappa to the East.
The D.O.C. is managed by the Consortium of Protection which has its headquarters in Breganze: formed in 1982 by five wine producers of the area, today unites sixteen members winemakers.
The Consortium is an interprofessional non–profit industry association, for the protection, enhancement and care of the interests of the Breganze Designation of Controlled Origin.
From the point of view of wine, the D.O.C. Breganze includes fifteen types of wine: Rosso, Merlot, Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Marzemino, Bianco, Tai, Vespaiolo, Vespaiolo Spakling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Torcolato.
Among these, the most famous and representative is certainly Breganze Torcolato, obtained from the most beautiful dried bunches of Vespaiola, the native grape variety of Breganze.
The wine with designation of origin is an impressive product, the result of the symbiosis of natural factors, like climate, soil and grape variety, and human factors, like customs, technological choices and research. With the recognition of the Arcole designation of origin published on 13/09/2000, an extensive area of high wine–growing tradition of Verona and Vicenza went in this way to further redevelop its productions.
The production zone is located, in effect, in the municipalities of Arcole, Cologna Veneta, Albaredo, Zimella, Veronella, Zevio, Belfiore, Caldiero, San Bonifacio, Soave, Colognola ai Colli, Monteforte, Lavagno, Pressana, Vago and San Martino Buon Albergo in the Province of Verona ed in the municipalities of di Lonigo, Sarego, Monte, Orgiano and Sossano in the Province of Vicenza. The vineyard area which falls within the contained area enrolled in the register of the vineyards of the Arcole D.O.C. covers about 2,500 hectares in the province of Verona and about 1,000 hectares in the Province of Vicenza.
Within the production area the Regulations provide for a more restricted area with the possibility to use, next to the name of the "Arcole" designation, also the name of the grape variety. This area includes nine municipalities: those of San Bonifacio, Arcole, Caldiero, Belfiore, Zimella, Cologna Veneta, Veronella, Zevio, Albaredo d’Adige, some entirely, others only partially, all of which are located in the province of Verona.
The characteristic of this area is to have a good part of the soil with a high percentage of sand, a parameter that makes the ground more suited to growing grapes for a wine of great quality. However, the current production is actually still characterized by quite high planting distance with "a pergola veronese" forms of breeding.
The most immediate needs are, therefore, to update the ampelographic base according to what has been proposed by the specification for upgrading plants. With the need to manage and exploit this important time of transformation and productive evolution on 8th February 2001, the Consortium for the Protection of Arcole D.O.C. Wine was founded.
The producers who are members of this structure represent most of the 80% of the productive potentialities of the whole area. The same proportion of representativeness is valid as regards vinification and marketing.
According to the statutes, the Consortium is called upon to:
1. protect, enhance and look after the interests relating to the designation of origin of the Arcole D.O.C. wines, as well as:
2. carry out all the activities and tasks of Consortia by EU and national legislation in the field of wines with designation, with reference to the Law No.164/1992 and subsequent amendments and related regulations.
Another important aspect that does not appear formally in the rules of the specification and in the statute is the one related to the management of the Designation. To manage means to verify the economic impact of production on the market.
This is the great challenge that today even a young designation like the Arcole D.O.C. must face, a challenge that must also involve other parties in addition to producers, because designation and typicality are a collective heritage of an area.
