The DOC Montecucco, situated at the northeastern boundaries of the province of Grosseto, embraces the municipalities of Arcidosso, Campagnatico, Castel del Piano, Cinigiano, Civitella Paganico, Roccalbegna and Seggiano, and is easily accessible from the main roads of Tuscany.
The area is highly suitable for the production of Sangiovese and enjoys very favorable climatic conditions. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea, just a few miles far, contrasts behind with the presence of the now extinguished Amiata volcano.
These elements ensure a good ventilation, a proper water intake during the winter months and the long sunny summers.
Composed of fragmented sandstone in the more shallow areas, the soil changes its composition along the slopes of Mount Amiata, with the strong presence of lava compounds, which give vines minerality and flavor; right from the combination of this terroir and the skilful hands of our farmers, a sangiovese of great value is made: Montecucco.
Created collecting instances of many Tuscan producers which have joined the most prestigious wineries in the region and the cooperative movement, the Tuscan Wines Protection Body protects the Tuscan oenology, enhances the Tuscan wine products and preserves the agricultural heritage of Tuscany.
A perfect area since the time of the Etruscans. This is the thread that binds the companies of the Montescudaio Consortium. Fourteen wine gems inserted in a Tuscan landscape influenced by the sea. The D.O.C., in effect, includes all municipalities in the Val di Cecina, Volterra excluded. A thousand–year story that is remembered by the "Cinerario di Montescudaio" (seventh century BC) depicting a funeral banquet with a large "crater" vase in which wine was mixed with water, according to the Greek custom.
The history of the vine in this area winds through centuries to the present days. In 1968 the Festival of Wine was founded, while in 1977 the D.O.C. was obtained with two types: a red wine based on Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Malvasia, and other varieties like Canaiolo and Colorino, and a white wine made from Trebbiano, Malvasia and Vermentino, which can also be produced as Vin Santo, dry, semi–dry or sweet (specifications which, since 1999, have been providing for the use of the so–called "innovative" vines like Cabernet, for example).
In these forty years, the Consortium has established itself and has achieved important objectives by bringing the name of this area on the international scene thanks to quality products. In recent years, then, the desire to make talk about Montescudaio and its territory out of the local and regional context has become more and more accentuated.
An ambitious program that rests its foundation on the willingness of producers to work in concert with local governments and with the present associative realities. A solid path that has given, up to date, significant results.
After an initial and partial recognition of the value of the wines of this territory – established by the introduction of the Orcia Typical Geographical Indication (Ministerial Decree of 22.11.1995) – at the beginning of 2000 the important assignment of the Orcia Designation of Controlled Origin (Ministerial Decree of 14.02.2000) has been achieved, for the further enrichment of the oenological potential of the province of Siena. And the commitment, the initiative and tenacity of some producers pioneers has led to the creation also of the Orcia Wine Consortium.
As a free association of producers, the Consortium has the goal of protecting and promoting the image of this wine and to spread the knowledge about it in Italy and around the world, encouraging participation in the most qualified national and international events of groups of producers, but also coagulating small and large companies in view of a common strategy for the success of quality wines with Orcia Designation of Origin, working also closely in territorial synergy with the Orcia Wine Route and with the Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park of the Val d’Orcia.
Companies belonging to the Consortium for the Protection are currently 36. In terms of vinegrowing surface, the Consortium has a representativeness of about 91%. Data derive from the general census of the wine–growing area completed in March 2010: 1154.97 hectares planted in the area of the DOC result. Of these, 1059.36 hectares are payable to the members of the Consortium and 991, 98 are enrolled in the DOC, and the remainder is recognized as IGT Toscana.
Founded in the spring of 2000, the Consortium has the tasks of control and protection of Cortona DOC wines and spreads knowledge about them with effective cultural, of popularization and promotion activities.
It protects the image and prestige of the designation with continuous quality controls and undertakes cultural initiatives aimed at making know the world Cortona, its territory and its wines.
Currently, there are 22 member companies and represent almost the totality of the producers. Among them, we include trademarks born and rooted in the region, others of more recent tradition and others of international importance. Encouraging is the fact that these latter have given so much credit to the territory of Cortona to make it the seat of substantial investments.
The environmental conditions, the natural vocation of the sites and soils, the tradition and the culture of wine have led to the spread of a viticulture of extreme quality and to the production of high quality wines.
The consortium has the task is to interpret, transmit and ensure this quality.
The Consortium was founded in 1992 to protect the Morellino di Scansano Wine which can now count on 26 members companies, in addition to the approximately 150 members producers of DOC grapes that give their grapes to the Morellino di Scansano Cooperative Winery.
The goal of the Consortium is to give an address to the wine policy of the territory, to ensure quality through the specification of production and to enhance the product on the market.
By the decree of 28th December 2000, published in Gazzetta Ufficiale No.18 of 23rd January 2001, the Consortium was appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, "to perform the functions of protection, enhancement, general care of the interests relating to the above mentioned designation of origin, as well as of proposal and consultation in respect of the public administration, pursuant to the Article no.19, paragraph no.1 of the Law of 10th February 1992 No.164".
The Designation of San Gimignano Consortium was founded under the name of Consortium of Vernaccia di San Gimignano in 1972 by the will of a small group of producers of Vernaccia, aware of the utility and the need for a aggregation for a proper management of the name. An adventure of a private nature, but whose positive effects have an influence on more levels on the whole territory of the Municipality of San Gimignano.
Since the foundation, the Consortium had clearly understood the purpose for which it was founded and has pursued these goals with tenacity over the years:
Enhancement of wines and defence of their image.
Brand promotion.
Research and development of the quality of the products.
Just a careful and focused work of the Consortium that has operated, over the years, in synergy and symbiosis with master winemakers and vintners to increase the quality of the productions, has resulted in 1966 the Controlled Designation of Origin: Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the first Italian wine to be awarded the designation, which in 1993 became a DOCG.
Even today the main commitment of the consortium is the pursuit of the enhancement of the image and the identity of San Gimignano wines, the implementation of sales and marketing initiatives in support of diffusion in Italy and abroad of Vernaccia di San Gimignano and San Gimignano Rosso DOC, the control, monitoring and improving of the quality of production both in grapes and in wine.
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Consortium was founded in 1965 with the goal of protecting and promoting the image of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in Italy and in the world and, subsequently, that of the Red wine and Vin Santo.
Currently, the vinegrowers members of the Consortium are 230 representing more than 90% of the planted area, which is almost its totality. The bottlers are 72 members out of a total of 89.
Among the main activities, we organize promotional and trade actions on the territory of Montepulciano (including the Preview of Vino Nobile, which takes place every year in February) and the direct participation and/or together with his associates in events and fairs in Italy or abroad.
The Consortium is also involved in promotion activities through the creation of communication tools and activities of media and public relations.
It also offers a service of technical assistance to member companies on the bureaucratic and project aspects, but also by organizing technical and training meetings.
Among the various initiatives undertaken by the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Consortium there is the creation and management of the consortium’s Enoteca located in Piazza Grande, behind the magnificent Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leoni (restored thanks to a joint intervention of the producers and the Municipality), in the charming basement of the Palazzo del Capitano. In the same historic building there are the offices of the Consortium. In addition, the complex also houses the Agri–Food Analysis Laboratory and the Information Centre of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Road, structures of which the body is a member.
One can therefore speak of "Palazzo del Vino", which looks the same space which includes the Town Hall and the Cathedral. Piazza Grande, already by itself a fascinating setting rich in history and culture, thus becomes the "synthesis" of the Montepulciano of today represented by the civil power of the Town, the religious power of the Diocese and by the economic and productive activity of the wine sector.
Historically, the Chianti Colli Senesi receives the DOC in 1967, while the precious title of DOCG later, in 1984. Geographically, the Chianti Colli Senesi is a very vast and specific territory inside the production area of Chianti wine, located entirely within the province Siena, to which it owes its name.
Although the official founding of the Chianti Colli Senesi Consortium goes back to the distant February 21st, 1977, its actual birth takes place on May 31st, 2001, when the consortium was reorganized in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce of Siena and the organizations in the sector, creating new ambitious goals and projects.
Today, the Chianti Colli Senesi Consortium has about 300 affiliated members, a growing and evolving reality, always looking for new challenges and markets to explore.
With over 600 registered memebers, of which 350 bottlers, the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium represents today 95% of the whole designation and has a modern, well–structured and professional organization to perform in the best way the missions it was created for: the protection and enhancement of the Chianti Classico wine and its brand.
From the front of the preservation and enhancement, the consortium machine develops in different organs with a common commitment towards producers and consumers of the classic wine and its land of origin.
The Chianti Wine Consortium was founded in 1927 thanks to a Group of winegrowers of the Provinces of Florence, Siena, Arezzo and Pistoia, subsequently expanding its operativeness in the whole area of production, recognized by the Regulations of 1967, then incorporated in the Designation of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin.
There are over 2,500 producers protected by the Consortium for more than 10,500 hectares of vineyards and about 550,000 hectoliters of Chianti wine produced. In addition, to the Chianti Wine Consortium the surveillance on Chianti was entrusted by the Ministry of agriculture with DM May 22nd, 1978, a position later confirmed for other designations of competence in 2003 and 2004, for which the representativeness of members is similar.
The Consortium of the Brunello di Montalcino Wine was founded in 1967, in the aftermath of the recognition of the D.O.C. as a free association of producers willing to protect their wine and to enhance its features. The Consortium favored the creation of a productive texture made by old and new, large and small companies, united by common goals of respecting nature and aspiring to the high quality of wine.
The Consortium organizes events in Italy and abroad and the participation of producers at trade shows. It minds of the image of the designations of Montalcino through a press office, spreads news through a website and numerous publications in multiple languages. A less visible but very important activity is the support to the specialized press and to opinion makers, for which tastings and tours are organized. Equally important is the care for members on specifications that regulate the production of wine.
In Carmignano wine has been produced since Etruscan and Roman times, as evidenced by the discovery of jars of wine in some Etruscan tombs and the assignment by Caesar to his veterans, between 50 and 60 BC, of certain lands between Arno and Ombrone, grown already at that time with vines.
In the archives of the state of Florence, moreover, a parchment dated 804 was found: it is a lease contract documenting that already 1,200 years ago in Carmignano olive groves and vines were cultivated.
At the end of the fourteenth century Datini bought at a high price the Carmignano for his winery in Prato and in the seventeenth century it was celebrated by Redi as a wine worthy of Jupiter.
In addition, Carmignano can be proud to have been selected by the Grand Duke Cosimo III De Medici (in 1716) as one of the 4 areas with viticultural vocation in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The motu proprio Decree and the Notice, in effect, regulated with precise rules production, the geographical limits, the trade of wines produced in these areas, creating the first D.O.C. in the world.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the winery of the Marchese Niccolini company produced and exported Carmignano.
Then came a period of eclipse. In the 30s of the latest century, the ancient D.O.C. of the Medici was incorporated in the Chianti Montalbano D.O.C. The return to the Carmignano designation represented for the Carmignano’s producers the recovery of a historical–territorial identity of their wine and it was a long and difficult conquest to whose realization Ugo Contini Bonacossi, of Tenuta di Capezzana, along with engineer Cianchi of Poggiolo, and the then mayor of Carmignano Dr. Lenzi, gave a fundamental contribution. In 1975 the Carmignano D.O.C. was finally recognized, retroactive – for the old wine – until the 1969 vintage.
In 1990 the D.O.C.G. retroactive to 1988 was obtained.
But it is not just history. The presence of some varieties, that in the rest of Tuscany are not very frequent, or even strangers, make this wine very different from Chianti for precise organoleptic qualities.
Citille di Sopra was founded in 1997 with the company transfer by the Innocenti family to their son Fabio. Already owner of part of the company since 1992, Fabio decided to undertake the winemaking activity to accompany his ten–year experience in the cultivation of cereals. From a careful analyses of the land, the rootstocks of cuttings and clones of Sangiovese to be planted were chosen. The various forms of cultivation of vines were carefully evaluated, but it was decided to use the spurred cordon, as both the limited quantities produced and the area in which we find ourselves, require to use this type of cultivation. Among more than one hundred hectares of land in ownership of Fabio Innocenti, currently only 5.5 ha are planted with vines, for which the best areas for the production of Brunello have been selected.
The soil is clayey on average, rich in limestone, interspersed with large areas of tufa, basically thin, ideal terrain for vines grown in the middle hill, avoiding, in these areas, the presence of fog, freezing and late hoarfrost, that may occur in valleys. The ventilation is almost constantly present, to ensure a good protection against plant diseases, while minimizing pesticide treatments.
