The agricultural company of Giuseppe Gabbas covers an area of about 30 hectares, of which 20 are cultivated with vineyards and 5 with olive groves, at an altitude between 240m and 350m above sea level in a valley at the foot of Supramonte, in the heart of Sardinia, ten km from Nuoro, the capital of Barbagia.
Deep soils, of granitic origin and sufficiently permeable, retain some moisture even during periods of long drought.
The particular climate of the area, influenced by the temperate breezes that come from the sea, which is a little more than twenty miles far, and the proximity of mountains, provide a good temperature range, with positive effects on the color and the flavor profile of grapes.
This promotes an ecosystem that is ideal for vines, reducing, inter alia, pesticide treatments, performed only with traditional products.
The rationality of the plants and their small extension make possible to practice a viticulture of the highest quality, based on growing principles such as pruning and restrained crop yields aimed at obtaining the exaltation of the varietal characteristics of the grapes.
The most cultivated grape variety is Cannonau, to which other local varieties were added, selected among the most interesting of the rich Sardinian wine panorama.
This small and dynamic production reality in an area particularly suited to the cultivation of vines is always able to give its best, giving wine traits of elegance and territoriality that elsewhere are difficult to reach.
Gostolai Wine Company began its activity in 1988, just for fun, but with the aim to enhance more and more grapes that the land of Oliena and its particular microclimate produce.
The name Gostolai comes from the locality of the same name where the family vineyards are located, that provided the grapes for the production of our first wines.
Over the years, the company has increased and diversified production, acquiring grapes from other growers who found rewarding and gratifying to give up their production, which by the way was subtracted to the anonymity which was first intended.
Currently, we produce five DOC wines and seven IGT wines, as well as three types of grappa.
The beginning of this activity is strictly linked to Nenneddu's and Luisa's will, courage and attachment for their own land. Since their childhood they spent all their energies to create products that could reflect with their taste the rare beauty of Oliena's territory.
The company is spread on 50 hectares 30 of which are cultuvated as vineyards. The wine grape mainly present here is the red Cannonau, the “king of Sardinia”, probably an autochthonous grape variety which was already present on the island 3000 years ago and for this reason is considered the oldest of the Mediterranean area. It is spread throughout the whole region and it found in Oliena its natural habitat.
In 2006, 19 producers have decided, forming the Cantine di Orgosolo winery, to select the best Cannonau grapes coming from their vineyards and to produce a rich and complex red wine.
