The territory of Ghemme, in the municipality of Novara, has been bound to the production of wine since the Roman period. This ancient bond is enhanced by the company of the Arlunno family, using for wines both the Latin names of vineyards and important historical references. Il Mimo, the name used for the rosé based on Nebbiolo, refers to the exceptional archaeological discovery of the Treasury of Ghemme. Silver trophies of all shapes dating back to Roman times, among which masks used for theater performances, when the theater was sacred to Bacchus. It is a way to tie the wine culture to traditions, without which our wine would lose its noblest sense.
No family traditions nor business choices matured aound a table. The history of Cascina Zoina is a story of passion, a passion born almost by accident, with the occasion of buying a small plot of land planted with vines in the hills of Mezzomerico, and what started in 1999 as a simple hobby for the production of good table wine, over time has evolved in the current three hectares of vineyard entered in the designation of origin of the Novara Hills.
The winery, in which winemaking and aging take place, was deliberately built very close to the stables where horses are accommodated, the other great passion of ours, Not surprisingly, wines are named after it.
Quality wines that the company is constantly seeking to improve, year after year, harvest after harvest, following the work in the vineyard and in the winery. Because to do things right you need passion.
A passion that is also a commitment to transfer in wines the unique imprint of the grapes of the area, in a unique combination of flavors and aromas that can transmit strongly that identity of the Novara hills of which every single bottle intends to be the expression.
Torraccia del Piantavigna is a family-run winery that produces high-quality wines using traditional methods. The winery is surrounded by beautiful vineyards and hills, providing a picturesque backdrop for wine tastings and tours. The knowledgeable staff is friendly and passionate about wine, always happy to share their expertise and answer questions. The wines themselves are elegant and complex, showcasing the unique terroir of the region. Cavallirio is one fo the municipalities in the Novara area included in the Doc of the Boca wine, a designation forgotten for a long time, but that in those last years has regained vigour. Among the producers who believe and are investing in the ancient Boca wine, Sergio Barbaglia stands out, flanked with enthusiasm by his children. They are recovering some hilly areas situated in the natural park of Monte Fenera, to plant new vineyards of Nebbiolo and Erbaluce. There are some bureaucratic problems to solve, related to the zone where the abandonment of the vineyards, now almost centuries old, has left space to woods and wild boars. But the willingness is stronger than bureaucracy and we hope not to have to wait for a long time to taste these wines, produced in a decisively special territory.
At the beginning of the 90s, during a visit to this region, Alexander Trolf, oenologist, and me, wine importer, were impressed by the beauty of the landscape, nestled in the woods of the Natural Park of Monte Fenera and for the quality of its wines. Convinced that this area was the perfect place to be a wine company, we started to work immediately. In this way, we met Antonio Cerri, one of the last producers of typical and very interesting wines that, until 1991, was producing 25 hectoliters per year. His vineyard in "Campo delle Piane", 0.6 hectares of Spanna of more than 50 years of age, are located high up in the hills, surrounded by woods.
At the time–honoured age of 80 years, Antonio Cerri decided to retire and offered his vineyard and winery to Alexander Trolf and me.
We bought it.
Later, like a puzzle, we added other small plots of land, up to the current 6.5 hectares, grown with Nebbiolo and Vespolina, for the production of BOCA DOC.
Unfortunately, a tragic car accident prevented Alexander Trolf from seeing the realization of his plans, but his ideas and his dreams live in the new vineyard "Meridiana", and the yellow house, the company logo, located in the middle of the vineyard, symbolizes a new beginning.
Azienda Agricola Ca Nova was founded in 1996. At the foot of the spectacular Monte Rosa massif, on the findings of the Novara hills, in the heart of High Piedmont, in a few years, about ten hectares of owned vineyards were planted, and the modern winemaking cellar was set up.
Today, the philosophy with which wines are produced wines is based on the combination of the quality of grown grapes in our vineyards and the care and attention in winemaking.
Cantina Ca’ De’ Santi since 1894 retains the secrets of the great wines of the Novara Hills. Surrounded by the places of wine among ancient barrels and historical vaults, Cantina Ca’ De’ Santi was founded with the aim of making known to wine lovers and curious people ancient and modern flavors, made of good wines like Ghemme D.O.C.G., Gattinara D.O.C.G., Sizzano D.O.C., Nebbiolo D.O.C., Bonarda and many others. Every day, on request, guided tours and tastings of our wines paired with local produce!
At the end of the fifties, the second generation of the Brigatti family gave the turning point. The vineyards were extended, changing types of farming, and the practice of selection of the grapes as well as wine aging and bottling were introduced.
Since 1995 the Brigatti farm has been directed by Francesco, oenologist and agronomist, and continues to be strictly family–run. It has six hectares of vineyards cultivated according to the criteria of integrated pest management in respect of the environment. The annual production of about 20,000 bottles.
Ippo is a small company of ancient traditions, but at the same time a modern interpreter of the most known designations of Novara.
