A selection of the best wines produced by the Abbey of Novacella (Bressanone), in particular the Praepositus line, will be featured from 2nd to 4th June in the cloister of the abbey of Fossanova di Priverno (Latina), on the occasion of the second edition of "Vini d'Abbazia”, the event designed to commemorate the role that, since the Middle Ages, convents and abbeys have had not only in the production of wine, but also in the preservation of vines that otherwise would have been lost.
The appointment not to be missed is for 18 on 2 June, when a guided tasting of some labels of the prestigious Praepositus line is scheduled, which represents the epitome in terms of excellence and longevity of the wines of the Novacella Abbey. The aim of this line, made up of 8 white wines, 2 red wines and 2 sweet wines, has always been to represent the territory at the highest levels. Among the whites, they include Müller Thurgau, Sylvaner, Grüner Veltliner, Kerner, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Sylvaner Stiftsgarten 2019 from a single vineyard. Among the reds, there are Pinot Nero Riserva, Lagrein Riserva and Pinot Nero Riserva Vigna Oberhof 2019 from a single vineyard. Among the desserts, Moscato Rosa and Kerner Passito.
Werner Waldboth , sales and marketing director of Abbazia di Novacella , who will lead the masterclass on June 2, comments: “ Since its foundation, which dates back to 1142, this Augustinian monastery has been able to count on various vineyards, wonder for the landscape and pleasure for the palate, as well as on farmsteads and land. As early as 1177, Pope Alexander III recognized the ownership of vineyard land to the monastery. Then, following donations, bequests, purchases and exchanges, the Abbey came into possession over the centuries of a conspicuous heritage of vineyards in the midst of which it is still immersed. The Fossanova appointment from 2nd to 4th June will certainly be an opportunity to tell once again the importance of great wines linked to the history and culture of the territory in which they are born ”.
Today Abbazia di Novacella manages two farms: the first is located in Novacella and has 6 hectares of vineyards, 12 hectares of orchards and 0.2 hectares of herbaria; the second, Tenuta Marklhof, also owned by the convent, is instead located in Cornaiano and can count on 22 hectares of vineyards, 13 hectares of orchards and 24 hectares of woods. The Abbey also owns 700 hectares of forest and 400 hectares of highland pastures which are partly used as a hunting reserve. The annual production of the winery is around 850,000 bottles – made up of 80% white wines and 20% reds – distributed in the region and in Italy through its own network of agents, as well as abroad with importers present in around 40 countries.
