Umbria has been elected among the “10 Best Wine Travel Destinations” 2014 by the popular U.S. magazine Wine Enthusiast. The well–famous American magazine has recognized the land of Sagrantino and Orvieto among the “10 Best Wine Travel Destinations” 2014.
The recognition has come thanks to the success of the Umbrian wine production, the historical richness of the territory and the beauty of the landscape, as illustrated by Kerin O’Keefe, editor of the magazine: «unlike other most well–known tourist destinations in Italy, the hills and valleys of Umbria, covered with olive groves and vineyards, seem untouched by time. Next to the pristine natural beauty, Umbria is full of well–preserved medieval towns. Orvieto rests on a volcanic soil, and is home to one of Italy’s most beautiful cathedrals. Assisi is the home of the Basilica of St. Francis, while Perugia, the capital of the Region, offers a variety of museums and two universities that give it great cultural vivacity».
Umbria is the only Italian region at the forefront of the wine tourist destinations in the world and many are the names of professionals who have endorsed the region:
– Caprai, who gave value and shine to the territory that relaunched Sagrantino di Montefalco and its territory.
– the Lunelli (Ferrari) family, with their “The Carapace” company, the winery created by Arnaldo Pomodoro
– Decugnano dei Barbi, Orvieto reference winery
– Lungarotti, leader business of Torgiano, that has always been among the leading realities of wine tourism with its Wine Museum, and Castello della Sala, Antinori Umbrian Winery, where Italian top wines such as Cervaro della Sala come from
– Gianfranco Vissani, chef with his Casa Visscher di Baschi
Other areas to be included among the “10 Best Wine Travel Destinations” 2014 in Wine Enthusiast are:

The comments to the prize
«The fact that an authoritative magazine like “Wine Enthusiast” indicates Umbria (the only Italian region) among the top ten destinations overall, which is worth going to taste good wine, as well as an opportunity to enjoy a magnificent stay in a beautiful region from the point of view of landscape, rich in historical and artistic sightseeing and culturally vibrant, thanks to its cultural fabric and its major events, is a recognition that fills us with satisfaction». So the Councillor of Agriculture of the Umbria Region Fernanda Cecchini speaks, who adds that the award goes «to the great work we have done not only in the field of viticulture and winemaking, but in the full enhancing of the territories and of Umbria as a brand, capable of expressing a unique offer of landscape, history, art, territories, food and wine of excellence».
«This award should be seen not as an end point – the leader of Sagrantino di Montefalco, Marco Caprai, comments – but as an opportunity to grow more. This is the Umbria to be promoted».
