The Consortium for the Protection of the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena has been founded. The Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is a standing PDO – PGI product, among the sources of pride of Italian agri–food in the world. The merger of the existing consortia creates the fourth pole of Italian agri–food.
The large numbers that characterize the vinegar of Modena, along with the growing interest in it on the part of consumers, represented the main reasons for the union between the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Consortium and the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Supply Chain Consortium. The purpose of their union is to coordinate the ideas for a more effective protection and enhancement of this product at all institutional levels, both national and supranational.
With this merger, then, the fourth pole for the Italian agribusiness, fourth pole for value and the first for export, has been founded: the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, recognized at Community level as GPI in 2009, is the result of the work of about 80 companies operating in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia and present in the markets of over 100 countries.
Who are the members of the Board of Directors?
A new board of directors has been appointed.
Here are the components: Mariangela Grosoli and Sabrina Federzoni, Giovanni Carandini, Armando De Nigris, Angelo Giacobazzi, Cesare Mazzetti, Giacomo Ponti, Enrico Zini and Stefano Berni.
The president of the Consortium has been appointed, too: Stefano Berni, currently also director of the Consortium for the Protection of Grana Padano.
What are the missions of the Consortium for the Protection of the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena?
“The Consortium for the Protection of the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena has two missions – the president Berni said – namely, the protection and guarantee of income to all firms in the supply chain. A PDO and PGI product has sense to exist only if it is able to enhance its raw material and its transformation process, and this is the cornerstone and founding element with which the EU has implemented the system of certified products. The Board of Directors will do its utmost to ensure that the new consortium works in the best way, fostered by the enthusiasm of all in order to ensure maximum efficiency”.
“We were able – Grosoli added – to reach an agreement among owners of large companies and small local firms, and this has been a great success for the benefit of a territory and a product that offers families a good value for money”.
Agribusiness: the primacy of Emilia Romagna
The Emilia Romagna Region has already the highest concentration of PDO and PGI, and with this consortium it will strengthen its leadership putting himself firmly at the top among the territories oriented to agribusiness. This sector is crucial in the Emilia Romagna region, as confirmed by Roberta Chiarini of the General Directorate for Agriculture of the Emilia Romagna Region: “ To defend PDO and PGI production means to safeguard economy, businesses and the territory. The constitution of the Consortium is for producers of balsamic vinegar and for institutions the achievement of an important goal supported also by the Region for a long time. The balsamic vinegar of Modena is one of the most imitated in the world, or rather, the term “balsamic” is one of the most abused, and this new body will activate itself to safeguard it at least within the European borders”.
