From North to South, over 500 labels representing the extraordinary and composite universe represented by the Italian native varieties, were tasted by a jury made up of both Italian and international critics and journalists during two days of intense work. Two blind tasting sessions, which brought 55 labels representing the different categories in competition to the final tasting on Tuesday 20 October.
The Best White Wine is won by the Claudio Mariotto company, with the Colli Tortonesi DOC Derthona Timorasso 2018 . Among the rosé wines we go to the slopes of Etna in Sicily with the Feudo Cavaliere winery which wins first place in this category with the Etna Rosato DOC Millemetri 2016 . Still Piedmont among the red wines, protagonist the main grape of the Langhe, the nebbiolo, with the Barbaresco DOCG Montefico 2017 by Carlo Giacosa . The best bubbles are from the Marche region with the main grape of the region, Verdicchio: the Cantina Colognola Tenuta Musone climbs only the top step of the podium with the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC Spumante Brut Musa 2018 . Among the sweet wines a rare passito, produced in Emilia Romagna, that of the small Lusignani farm: the Colli Piacentini DOC Vin Santo di Vigoleno 2009.
Among the protagonists of the Autochtona Award, once again this year the selections of Tasting Lagrein took place, which reward the famous native red grape variety of Alto Adige. In the "Kretzer" category, the Südtirol - Alto Adige DOC Lagrein Kretzer 2019 from Muri Gries wins. In the "Classic" category we find the Südtirol - Alto Adige DOC Lagrein Rubeno 2019 by Kellerei Andrian , finally among the Riserva Kellerei - Cantina Meran Burggräffler Südtirol - Alto Adige DOC Lagrein Riserva Segen 2017 .
And, again, the special Autochtona Award prizes. The Terroir Award was assigned to the Venetian company Fongaro with the Lessini Durello DOC Riserva Brut 2012 . The Spirito diVino Award, assigned by the magazine of the same name, instead goes to a historic reality in the Aosta Valley: Les Crêtes with the Valle d'Aosta PDO Petite Arvine Fleur 2018 . The third special prize, awarded by the Association of Italian Wineries Vinarius to the Best Under 40 Winemaker, goes to Davide and Riccardo Sobrino of the Cascina delle Rose company for Cascina delle Rose wine, Barbaresco DOCG Tre Stelle 2017.
The award ceremony, which took place in the pavilions of Fiera Bolzano , was broadcast on Facebook and followed by many of the finalist producers linked by video, who thus discovered the results of the competition live and spoke with their testimony. A new formula that, despite the absence of producers and the tasting counter open to the public due to the ongoing health emergency and the provisions of the Province of Bolzano, has managed to make room for an appointment that, year after year, has become a point of reference for the small realities of the Italian wine scene that preserve and enhance the many native vines present in our country.
" For us it was a special edition of Autochtona, not only because it took place in the midst of the emergency caused by the pandemic in progress, but also because it forced us to rethink the formula looking at the current situation and the future " explained Thomas Mur , director of Fiera Bolzano. " Many producers, about 350, have trusted us by sending their samples for our Autochtona Award, and this is a very important signal. It is a zero edition that gives us great confidence to continue investing in a highly authoritative award. ".
The jury present this year, which tasted in total safety, was composed of the representatives of the main Italian wine guides: Mario Busso (Vini Buoni d'Italia), Elio Ghisalberti (l'Espresso), Fabio Giavedoni (Slow Wine ), Christine Mayr (Vitae-AIS), Alessandra Piubello (I Vini di Veronelli), Nereo Pederzolli (Gambero Rosso), Riccardo Viscardi (Doctor Wine). Together with them Peer F. Holm , (president of the Sommelier-Union Deutschland eV Sommelier-Union, Thomas Rydberg (DinVinGuide), Chiara Giannotti (vino.tv), Leila Salimbeni (editorial coordinator of Spirito diVino), Pierluigi Gorgoni (coordinator of the Autochtona Award) and Alessandro Franceschini (Autochtona Award secretary).
" We worked very well during the two days of tastings, thanks to the presence of excellent professionals and a perfect organization " said Fabio Giavedoni , co-curator of Slow Wine and president of the jury. " I think the list of winners of this year's Autochtona Awards speaks for itself about the high quality of the wines present. They are the tips of the iceberg, but around them there was a number of very interesting proposals, especially within of some categories. This latter aspect is not obvious and not so easy to find in many events like this ".
