The wine regions of Langhe–Roero and Monferrato have become UNESCO World Heritage site.
After a process that lasted 11 years and the delivery of the final application in January 2013, among the aspirant areas there are also the hills of Nizza Monferrato, in South Asti, the heart of the production of Barbera d’Asti DOCG, the most exported in the world Red Wine from Piedmont.
To the city the DOCG Nizza owes its name, a super–Barbera produced in 18 municipalities. A small corner of land, great for traditions, history and culture of wine, as well as for innovation and improvement of knowledge of vinegrowing and winemaking. An area dedicated to the cultivation of Barbera that only in this place gives voice to its broader aspects and can fully show its qualities.
«Being included in the list of UNESCO – Filippo Mobrici, new president of the Consortium for the Protection of Barbera Wines of Asti and Monferrato, comments – means to recognize the exceptional worldwide value of the Piedmont region, its history, its identity, the people who live here. It is an award to farmers, men and women, who for decades have protected landscape and environment. It is a great source of pride. Now only one word: responsibility».
The new Unesco site touches the territories of Nizza Monferrato, Vinchio, Vaglio Serra, Mombercelli, Agliano and Castelnuovo Calcea.
