The capacity for reaction and the strength of the sector have emerged clearly, supported by constant work on various assets such as quality, territorial identity and international promotion.
“ 2024 was certainly an important test for us, given the significant decline in the 2023 harvest. In a global context marked by strong instability, the Sicilia DOC reaffirmed its role as a point of reference, guided by essential values such as quality, targeted promotion and constant research, with the key concept of “sustainability” at its core . Each challenge was faced with commitment and strategic vision, enhancing the work of our winemakers and producers ,” says Antonio Rallo, President of the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia .
The data demonstrate the solidity of the path undertaken: in 2024, 564,917.60 hectoliters were bottled, with a slight decrease of 5% compared to 2023. These numbers, while reflecting the complexity of the context, represent a confirmation of the ability to adapt and resilience of the Doc Sicilia production.
The production dimension offered further food for thought. Although marking a decline compared to 2023, the data relating to Doc Sicilia sparkling wines and rosés confirm the growing interest of the market in these categories, appreciated for their quality and distinctive identity. This dynamism testifies to the ability of Doc Sicilia labels to interpret market trends with authenticity and versatility, laying the foundations for growing interest even beyond national borders.
The Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia has in fact strengthened its presence on foreign markets, where the value and quality of Sicilian wines have found an increasingly attentive and passionate public. The promotional activities have seen the wines of the Doc Sicilia protagonists of masterclasses, walk around tastings and seminars, unique opportunities to meet enthusiasts, wine lovers , buyers and journalists who have been able to appreciate the distinctive qualities of a territory rich in excellence.
As a culmination of the Consortium's initiatives, 2024 has stood out as a key year for scientific research, the core of the Consortium's commitment.
“ The data from the 2024 harvest clearly show how crucial it is to continue investing in research, particularly in the creation of clones that are more resistant to diseases amplified by climate change. This year, more than ever, we have perceived the urgency of making sustainability a key principle for our viticulture. Climate change has affected us very closely, and as a Consortium we are committed to intensifying our efforts in research and innovation to mitigate its effects. This is a result that testifies to the resilience and value of our territory and our winemakers ,” says Giuseppe Figlioli, winemaker, Councilor of the Consortium and coordinator of research projects . “ The research activities undertaken, in collaboration with the University of Palermo, are producing important results. Projects such as “Germoplasma” aim to preserve and enhance native vines, offering winemakers concrete tools to face the challenges of climate change. Among the most significant projects, Bi.Vi.Si. and Vista Lucido, both aimed at enhancing viticultural biodiversity and promoting native vines ."
2024 leaves the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia with the certainty of a solid path and the desire to go further, with an eye to a 2025 that will see Sicilian wine establish itself even more on the international scene.
