Barolo and Barbaresco now present themselves vineyard to vineyard thanks to the new MeGa (Additional Geographical Mentions). This type of mentions make it possible to use geographical names corresponding to villages, towns or defined administrative areas, localized within the production area of the two DOCG.
The MeGa for Barolo are as well as 181, for Barbaresco there are 66. The size of the MeGa are very diverse ranging from 380 hectares of Bricco San Pietro (Monforte) to the one hectare of Bricco Rocche (Castiglione Falletto).
The names of the MeGa have been present on the labels for some time but only recently the right value to uniqueness has been given and their abuse has been prevented.
The Consortium for the Protection of Barolo and Barbaresco wanted to enhance them further with the new app "Barolo Official Map" and "Barbaresco Official Map" that contain the mapping of all the 181 MeGa.
"We begin a very important path – Pietro Ratti, president of the Consortium, says – We wanted a modern and fun way to communicate the mentions: here comes the idea of an app that is able to geo locate the vineyard where a bottle is made. Wine lovers, especially foreigners, need to know more: now, by the name that is on the label, you can go and see where the Vineyard that produced your wine is located". New technology for a traditional product of our lands, which will be presented also in the US with a series of press conferences aimed at telling the meaning and objectives of the MeGa.
In practice, the "cru" of the Barolo Barbaresco DOCG tell in the best way the story and the stories in those eleven and four municipalities.
"A few meters of land make a difference in the character of a wine. With the mentions we define a provenance. This is the great added value".
