State of the vineyard: excellent. Grape quality: very good, with little presence of fungal diseases. Climate: so far satisfactory.
This could be the winning cocktail of the 2020 harvest in Veneto.
With the early start of the harvest reduced by about a week, the green light should come on around 20 August with the harvest of the Pinot and Chardonnay for sparkling wine base.
However, to get the precise picture on the next harvest in the Veneto (and beyond) it will be necessary to wait for Thursday 6 August (10:00) when, on the ZOOM platform ( registration by 5 August on https://previsioni2020.eventbrite.it), Veneto Agriculture, with the Region, Avepa, Arpav and Crea-VE, will propose to winemakers the now historic (46th edition) Harvest Forecasts in Veneto, in the main Italian wine regions, in France and Spain. An event, this 2nd Focus of the Veneto Vitivinicolo Triptych , which will therefore allow us to obtain a precise picture of the upcoming harvest in the three main producing countries of the European Union. In fact, during the works, connections with Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Puglia and Sicily are planned, thanks to which a qualitative and quantitative estimate of the 2020 harvest will be provided in the main Italian wine regions, as well as in France and Spain which represent Italy's two main competitors on an international level.
The Focus of Veneto Agriculture will then focus on the state of the vineyard in the North-East and in particular in the Veneto region , with the presentation of the very first production estimates divided by suitable areas. A truly painstaking and unique work of its kind in Italy and beyond, the one developed by the regional team of the Triptych, which for the preparation of data has been using a network made up of technicians from wineries and Venetian consortia for many years.
Returning to the next harvest, it must be said that at this moment the Veneto vineyard is in a waiting phase ; that is, it awaits the return of the beautiful sunny days that have been seen until last week, accompanied by higher temperatures, with good temperature ranges and cool and airy nights, that is to say the ideal ingredients for the vineyard in this extremely important phase of the cycle vegetative. These last rainy days have in fact slowed down a bit the ripening phase of the grapes which for some varieties is not proceeding regularly, including Glera , which is struggling to complete the veraison phase (coloring of the berries).
Basically, that of 2020 seems to be a vintage that could be resolved with excellent qualitative results , given the medium / low production loads reported in the vineyards, but of course now the difference can only be made by the weather trend, which again this year with the its sudden changes is showing its concrete presence. All that remains is to cross your fingers.
