The winery, located in Valdobbiadene (TV) and led today by an entirely female governance , has placed the protection of the landscape at the basis of its mission, which began almost a century ago, when its founder Giuliano " wanted to do something for the hills ".
<< This report is a fundamental step on our journey towards production that is more attentive and sustainable for the environment and more respectful of people. – Declares Maria Elena Bortolomiol , President of the company - We have thus managed to concretely achieve results that are inspired by 5 of the 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), defined by the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The work we present today - continues Bortolomiol - is not a point of arrival but a new step in a path undertaken many years ago with concrete actions. Every day we aim to be increasingly witnesses of a long winemaking tradition but also guardians of the future.>>
The Sustainability Report highlights the concrete actions that have allowed the Valdobbiadene company to obtain the following results.
SDG 15 – Terrestrial life
Bortolomiol promotes biodiversity in the vineyard and works to preserve and improve the health of our local ecosystem. To protect the biodiversity of the Glera vine, the company has developed a project that involves the protection, study and restoration of genetic material of old native vine strains from the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area, recovering the most stable plants, of over fifty 'years.
Bio-monitoring of the vineyards has also been started by inserting beehives close to the vineyards: bees , insects highly sensitive to pollution and climate change, will become precious indicators of the health of the ecosystem.
SDG 13 - Climate Action
In 2008 Bortolomiol inaugurated the organic vineyard and in 2011 it introduced the Green Mark protocol, a regulation aimed at winemakers to produce better quality grapes with minimal environmental impact and to date almost all the suppliers who adopt the protocol are. Furthermore, together with the company Indaco2, the company has developed a life cycle analysis (LCA) of Ius Naturae Biologico and Grande Cuvée of the Founder Rive di San Pietro di Barbozza, to calculate the Co2 emissions and the compensation sources, in in this case the owned forest on Monte Cesen .
Since 2018, a life cycle analysis has been carried out, regulated by the ISO14040-44 standards, which led to obtaining the EPD certification for the Ius Naturae product. The carbon footprint for each 750 ml bottle of Bortolomiol “Ius Naturae” was calculated to be 1.54 kg of CO2eq (-22% compared to international averages). The company will also carry out the certification of the company's Carbon Footprint, according to the ISO 14064-1:2019 standard, during the two-year period 2023-2024.
It is attentive and sensitive towards the use and management of water resources , an increasingly important challenge, especially in the hills to which must be added all the good practices adopted in the general management of production, such as, for example, attention to energy consumption during all work phases.
SDG Objective 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production
Bortolomiol is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its activities, adopting sustainable agricultural practices, minimizing waste and promoting responsibility towards products . Over the years, management has been promoted that puts first place the context in which Bortolomiol operates, the most historic part of the Denomination, Valdobbiadene, and that enhances the craftsmanship of the winemakers who have taken care of the hills for generations. Furthermore, the adoption of a photovoltaic system allows the use of clean energy and a growing recycling system is developed for the reuse of materials .
SDG Goal 5 - Gender Equality
Female-led governance is a tangible example of the company's commitment to gender equality. Bortolomiol actively supports women's empowerment and promotes equality of opportunities inside and outside the company. Over 90% of the winery's staff comes from Valdobbiadene and neighboring towns in the province of Treviso , numbers that represent the tangible demonstration of the commitment to maintaining its excellence in the territory and enhancing the skills of highly qualified personnel, capable of sharing Bortolomiol values. Management policies, staff training and development, the promotion of an inclusive corporate culture and the constant commitment to employee well-being are issues of central and strategic importance for the company. Bortolomiol believes that its success is strongly connected to the relationships it builds and the bonds with its employees, suppliers, customers and the community in which it operates.
SDG Goal 1 - No Poverty
Bortolomiol believes that the fight against poverty starts from its own territory and is active at a local level through corporate social responsibility initiatives, creating job opportunities and providing training to community members . Bortolomiol's contribution to the valorisation, development of the territory, as well as the protection of the local historical-artistic heritage is demonstrated through active collaboration with bodies and institutions , such as universities, public administrations that share the values of preservation and promotion of the 'area.
