A new appointment with "Autochtona": two days to enjoy and know the wines from Italian native grape varieties.

Why "Autochtona" 2014?

"Autochtona" is the national Forum of local wines and offers a careful selection based on quality and typicality where 100 producers from 14 different Italian regions will present their native labels.

The "Autochtona" Forum wants to make know wines from native grapes, a real Italian wine heritage.

What will happen to "Autochtona" 2014?

The festival includes a series of interesting appointments:

"Autoctoni, che passione!", on Tuesday, 21st October, where the best wines in the tasting will be awarded with the "Autohtona Awards".

"Vinea Tirolensis", on Wednesday, 22nd October, with the tasting counters dedicated to winemakers in South Tyrol.

"Tasting Lagrein", the "Tasting Lagrein" show, the comparative tasting that will award prizes to the best Lagrein wines.

And not only. In the weekend before the event, all those who choose to taste wines from native grapes will receive directly at the wine stores of the city a free ticket valid for the entrance to the festival on 20th and 21st October.

What is a native grape variety?

The draft of the "Vine and Wine Consolidating Act" defines as native grape "a vine whose presence is recognized in demarcated geographical areas in the National territory". Matilde Poggi, president of the Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers (FIVI), has expressed her concerns stating in a footnote that «this would allow the recording as a native of whatever is planted at the date of its entry into force, without regard either for Italian productive traditions nor for the value of the real national vinegrowing peculiarities in the globalized market». The same opinion is expressed by the editor of the "Mille Vigne" Magazine, Maurizio Gily – a member of the jury of the 2010 edition of "Autoctoni, che passione!" – that in his blog includes the thinking of Professor Attilio Scienza, stating that «usually the problem is solved by considering as native the varieties whose presence in a given territory is "ancient", for written declarations or simply because there is no documentary evidence nor memories of its import from the outside».

Italian native vines

The OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) indicates the existence of 6154 native vines in the world and Italy grows as well as 453. Right 3 native vines are the most cultivated in Italy: Sangiovese, Trebbiano Toscano and Cataratto.
