For which on August 31st (9:30 am) all forecast collection data will be provided on the occasion of the "historic" focus (47th edition) of Veneto Agriculture with the Region, Avepa, Arpav and Crea-VE (registration and info : https://previsioni2021.eventbrite.it) , the report "The export of Veneto wine in the world. Year 2020 " was published today by the regional agency, available here: https://bit.ly/3go9Aeb ,
Exports of € 2.24 billion
In a nutshell, the report shows that in 2020, despite the fact that Veneto wine exports dropped by -3.3% compared to the previous year, the total value achieved was 2.24 billion euros. This is an important result, given that we are talking about a share equal to 36% of the value of the entire national sector, but above all that places our region in fourth place in a virtual world ranking, behind France, Italy and Spain. and ahead of Australia and Chile. For its part, national wine exports, again in 2020, fell by -2.4%, recording a turnover of 6.3 billion euros. Like the collections, the exported quantities of Veneto wine also dropped, reaching "only" 737 million kg with a decrease of -1.5% compared to 2019, while the average selling price recorded a decrease of up to 3 .03 euro / kg (-1.8%).
The export of sparkling wines is falling
The export of Venetian sparkling wines also suffered a slight decline last year. In fact, after the inexorable strong rise in sales abroad of this type of wine (mostly Prosecco) recorded in recent years, a slight slowdown has arrived in 2020, due to the pandemic for Covid. The volumes of sparkling wines exported, equal to about 2.33 million hectoliters, fell by -2.4% compared to the previous year, while the overall turnover of the sector, equal to 841 million euros, marks a loss of 8.6%. The average selling price, equal to 3.61 euro / kg, also dropped by 6.3% compared to 2019.
The still wine market is down but more stable
On the other hand, the foreign market for still bottled wines from Veneto is more stable, even if there is a decrease of -2.1% compared to the 1.27 billion euros collected, with the relative volumes sold falling by -3% net (3.9 million total hectoliters), while the average price is slightly up by 0.9% (3.27 euro / l).
USA, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United Kingdom above all
The new Veneto Agriculture report confirms that, also in 2020, foreign sales of Veneto wine were concentrated mostly in only three countries (equal to 53% of the total in value), with the United States leading the way with over 434 million euros, closely followed by Germany (388 million euros) and the United Kingdom (358 million euros). However, this scenario could prove to be a double-edged sword as a minimum disturbance of the markets (for example, the effects of Brexit, customs duties in the USA or problems related to the Covid pandemic) could have devastating effects for the Veneto wine exported to These countries. Many other interesting considerations also emerge from the Veneto Agriculture report. One above all: compared to 2011, the US market grew by 95.6% and the British by 137.5%, while the German market by 24.9%.
A look at 2021
The long wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, as expected, also had consequences in this early 2021. The turnover of the Italian wine export sector, in fact, in the first three months of the year (latest data available) fell by -4.3% (1.44 billion euros collected), with Veneto even losing -6.8% (about 500 billion euros) compared to the same period of the previous year. However, it must be said that these negative changes are based on the comparison between a quarter characterized by the crisis for the pandemic compared to the first quarter of 2020 in which the crisis was just beginning. In addition, the fall in transactions to the United States must also be taken into account, given that the importers in the first quarter of 2020 carried out large stocks of wine, especially Italian, to protect themselves from any tariff impositions: in practice, an excess of purchases. which in fact has distorted the usual trends.
