In one word: "no". Hard position taken by the Gal Terre del Primitivo after the news of a possible production of the precious wine in Sicily. "Our Primitivo can't be touched." The Gal takes sides in defense of the many producers and the image of the entire territory that, over the years, has built its brand on this precious grape.
«As we learn in these hours, there has been authorization for the plant and production in Sicily, but apparently someone is missing the implications that all this can generate. In the meantime, we are talking about damage to our identity and, last but not least, there is the risk of setting a precedent for the future: other indigenous varieties could be stolen from other regions, causing a centuries-old history to disappear ». Appreciated in Italy and in the world, economic flywheel for hundreds of families, Primitivo Dop e Igp is the symbol of Apulia wine-growing and brings with it much more. "Its cultural and identity value belongs to these places and no one can appropriate it," says the Gal, who remembers having built the entire 2014-2020 Local Action Plan precisely on this. «In the planning phase - they explain - we decided to focus on the widespread Museum of the Terre del Primitivo intended as a territory to be shared. A combination of naturalistic, artistic, historical, food and wine and human resources in which all our authenticity emerges, which is our true wealth, and we will not allow anyone to take it away. The Primitivo di Manduria wine, for generations, represents the image of this land, declined in its many aspects ranging from oenology to food and wine, from traditions and rural life. This is why we strongly condemn the possibility that other regions will cultivate this autochthonous Apulian grape. We are ready to team up with the institutions and realities that, like us, care about this area, defending it from any attempt to usurp our history and our economy ".
