The request was approved by the Veneto Region with decree no. 68 of 21 April 2023 and published in the BUR 60 of 02/05/2023.
“ We are satisfied with this resolution ”, declares Stefano Quaggio, Director of the Consorzio Vini Venezia , “ which certainly gives credit to last year's forward-looking choice implemented by the Consorzio Vini Venezia to protect its members and their productions. This manoeuvre, in fact, will allow the entire supply chain to benefit from the production of Pinot Grigio Venezia DOC ”.
For three years the Consorzio Vini Venezia has recorded an increase in bottlings compared to the previous year; in 2022 an increase of 9.8% was recorded compared to 2021, and of 15.59% on 2020. The bottlings registered in the first quarter of 2023 (January-March) are in line with the quarter of 2022. “ The Consortium, in agreement with the trade associations and the Veneto Region, evaluated the market trend and at the same time the requests for Venezia Doc Pinot Grigio registered over the years, deeming it appropriate ”, explains Quaggio.
Starting from the summer of 2022, the volumes of Pinot Grigio had been stored with value as at 31/12/2023 to avoid exceeding demand and, consequently, falling back into the contraction, as already happened previously. Here, the Consortium has promised to verify the trends in demand, in order to eventually be able to loosen the brake on production. The moment was not long in coming and, today, thanks to the positive trend of market trends, it was decided to proceed with the release.
The Venezia Doc denomination is certainly the leading one among the five protected by the Consorzio Vini Venezia (Venezia, Lison Pramaggiore, Piave, Lison Docg and Malanotte), and its spearhead is Pinot Grigio, 90% destined for export , especially to the UK and Germany. The Consortium has more than two thousand producers located between the provinces of Venice and Treviso. In 2022, Venezia Doc totaled a production of 11 million bottles (data from ValorItalia), the Doc Piave 1 million and the Lison Pramaggiore 488 thousand.
