Collio is a wine growing area known all over the world for its mineral and long-lived white wines which in this hilly area, located between the Julian Alps and the Adriatic Sea, acquire territorial characteristics of great expressiveness and boast excellent aging potential.
To support these viticulture excellences in a moment as uncertain as the current one, the Consorzio Tutela Vini Collio has listened to the needs of its members by identifying their needs in order to intervene in support of the local wine sector.
This is how, in the assembly held on Tuesday 30 June 2020, it was decided with 62% of votes in favor of implementing a 20% drop in yields relating to the upcoming 2020 harvest, a decision to be applied to all the vines regulated by the DOC Collio . Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon, Friulano, Malvasia and Ribolla Gialla are just some of the protagonists of this operation carried out by the Consortium in order to protect the positioning of the products and safeguard the work of the members.
"The task of the Consortium is to be an organ of protection of the territory, our most important asset" says David Buzzinelli, President of the Collio Wine Protection Consortium. "In such a delicate moment, listening to members was fundamental to directing our choices towards the solution of lowering yields. This decision has the aim of supporting vine growers in difficulty due to the pandemic event underway and the consequent drop in sales, while maintaining the high quality of our wines, recognized worldwide for their excellence ".
To protect this territory, where the peculiar environmental conditions have allowed the development of exemplary viticulture, in 1964 the Consortium for the Protection of Collio Wines was founded and since 1968 the area also boasts the Denomination of Controlled Origin. It is the Consortium which, through events and initiatives, deals with the protection and enhancement of the DOC Collio denomination. Today the Consortium includes almost three hundred producers including winemakers and bottlers and the Doc Collio area contains about 1500 hectares of hilly vineyards.
The decision to lower the yields of the 2020 vintage by a long phase of listening to the members wanted by the Consorzio Tutela Vini Collio ends with the decision to lower the yields by 20% . The meeting held on 30 June resolved with 62% of the votes in favor the reduction of all yields for the vines regulated by the DOC Collio.
