Next In Wine 2013: Roberto Matzeu, young talent for the future of Italian wine

The winner of the third edition of Next In Wine 2013 is Roberto Matzeu, winemaker from Sardinia, considered to be the promise for the future of Italian wine 2013


Next In Wine 2013, an award for the desire to do, to experiment, gleaning intelligently from the experiential richness of the past, in which this year many young people, who decided to establish themselves in the wine world with innovative ideas while maintaining strong tie with their roots, took part with their interesting projects.

Next In Wine is the prize awarded to young talents under 35 in the Italy Vineyard, organized by Simonit & Sirch Grapes Preparations and by the Italian School of Vine Pruning, in partnership with Bibenda and the Italian Sommelier Association.


Who is the winner Roberto Matzeu?

He is a 33–year–old Sardinian winemaker. In his work he shows enthusiasm, initiative, attention to tradition understood in its real effectiveness, in its real function and not in an ideological and strict way.


The reasons for the Next In Wine 2013 Award

Passion, technical expertise, profound knowledge of his area are the characteristics of Roberto Matzeu: “In his experience is all there, passion, knowledge acquired and recognized in the territory in which he operates, the recovery of a form of cultivation and even more: the recovery of a viticulture made ​​of small plots managed today by older people – said prof. Scienza summarizing the unanimous opinion of the jury, composed of Meritxell Falgueras, Francesco Gagliano, Gianluca Macchi, Fabio Mencarelli, Francois Murisier, Clementina Palese, Enrico Peterlunger, Federico Quaranta, Attilio Scienza, Diego Tomasi – A vinegrowing that, as Matzeu says, is “an already existing heritage that can be used at no initial costs and is a perspective of future for those young people without a job in my land”. “A statement that we of Next In Wine fully support and consider as an example to all the young talents in the Italy Vineyard”.


Numerous are the participants in the Next In Wine 2013 Award: the return to the intelligent land

Many young people took part in the “Next in Wine 2013” Award organized by Simonit & Sirch. The President of the Jury, Attilio Scienza, commented on the profile of the participants: “a cross–section of youth of unusual human outlines. (...) Some character traits are common to all, as if to draw a picture of what will be the identity of the Italian winemaker of the future. Passion for vines and viticulture, that emerges from the brief description of their projects, is manifested through the deep connection to the land that hosts them and to the type of wine to be produced, the recovery and protection of old vineyards, the development of native grapes (...). Their return to the land, however, is not an escape from reality but an action motivated by the desire to produce grapes and wine using the instruments that scientific innovation makes available to them (...). Therefore, viticulture is defined ’intelligent’ and young winemakers do not limit themselves to produce grapes but want to vinify them and commercialize the wine they produce, often with the providential collaboration of their she–travelling companions.
