Recently, the winners of the 39th edition of the Provincial Wine Competition "Marengo Doc Award" were announced.
The competition was organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Alessandria with the operational support of Asperia and of the Province of Alessandria. The Marengo Doc award is dedicated to the wines of the province of Alessandria and Monferrato. The wine samples presented at the Competition were 289 in total, of 93 companies, of which 12 for the category "aromatic", 101 for the category "whites", 170 for the category "red", and 6 for the category "sparkling".
The samples were tasted by 20 committees.
The Chamber of Commerce of Alessandria commented: 'This edition of the Provincial Wine Competition in 2013 coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of Doc in Italy: it is an important anniversary, because our competition was created as a result of that law. A regulatory approach - do not forget - strongly desired by men of viticulture of Alessandria and Casaleggio. If, in fact, the first draft of recognition of "typical wines" was advanced in 1921 by Arturo Marescalchi from Casaleggio, founder of Assoenologi, the law proposal of the DOC of 1963 was advanced by Senator Paul Desana, our unforgotten fellow citizen. Since then, the Italian Protected designations of origin that were registered reached the amount of 403, of which 330 DOC and 73 DOCG, while the IGP are 118. They are important numbers, whose "quantity" is still debated, but of undisputed importance for the spread of Italian wine all over Europe and the world, as the Doc represent the recognized excellence of the classification and qualification of wines'.
