A multi-year program to better train the winemakers. First action: to increase the biodiversity of the vineyards.

A program in line with the ten-year Farm to Fork plan , developed by the European Community to guide the transition to a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system and which provides for a 50% reduction in the use of pesticides in the agricultural sector. by 2030.
The first action activated is a research project, developed by FIVI in collaboration with the consultancy firm Perleuve of the agronomist Giovanni Bigot and with the University of Udine , which aims to increase the biodiversity of the vineyards through the progressive elimination of insecticides. of synthesis, the reduction of biological insecticides and the monitoring of useful organisms. The project, lasting 3 years, foresees as a first phase the monitoring of pests and their antagonists in the vineyard. The information collected is shared through the 4Grapes® app by individual companies and is useful for mapping the presence of the main arthropods harmful to the vine, mites and beneficial insects at national level, identifying intervention strategies with less impact and creating the basis for a national system of data sharing among the members of the Federation. In these first 4 months of activity, the winemakers who took part in this action carried out 3,912 surveys on 277 vineyards, controlling a total of 61,657 organisms.
" FIVI4FUTURE wants to be a wide-ranging project: a sort of container for many actions, of which this on the reduction of insecticides is only the first - underlines Gaetano Morella , Vice President of the Federation - In this case, the data collected will give us a picture of the situation throughout the national territory, giving companies the ability to understand if, how and when to intervene in the best way. A research promoted by the winemakers for the winemakers themselves, thanks to the collaboration with high-profile scientific partners ".
In addition to halving the use of plant protection products, further reducing those most harmful to the environment and human health, the European Union has identified three other fundamental objectives in the Farm to Fork program: to reduce the losses of substances in the soil by 50% and by 20%. % the use of fertilizers; reduce by 50% the sales of antimicrobials intended for farming and antibiotics for aquaculture, decreasing the risks due to antibiotic resistance; allocate 25% of agricultural land to organic farming.
“The goal of the entire FIVI4FUTURE project - concludes Morella - is to train the associates so that they can experience the transition of agriculture towards increasingly sustainable practices in a conscious and responsible way”.

FIVI - Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers
The Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers (FIVI) is an association founded in 2008 with the aim of representing the figure of the winemaker before the institutions, promoting the quality and authenticity of Italian wines. By statute, only producers who meet certain specific criteria can join FIVI: "The FIVI winemaker cultivates his vines, bottles his own wine, personally taking care of his product. He sells all or part of his harvest in bottles, under his responsibility. , with his name and his label ". Currently there are over 1300 associated producers, from all Italian regions, for a total of about 13,000 hectares of vineyards, for an average of about 10 hectares of vineyards per farm.
