Here the prisoners spend their last sentence, working in contact with nature to develop professional skills that facilitate their reintegration into the working and social reality.
Around a small vineyard, in the heart of an amphitheater overlooking the sea, the project begins, the aim of which is to allow prisoners to have a concrete and active experience in the field of viticulture, with the collaboration and supervision of agronomists and Frescobaldi oenologists.
Gorgona Rosso sees the light with the 2015 harvest, from some rows of Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero, grown in organic farming and then refined in terracotta jars.
Today the vineyard has an extension of two hectares, of which an initial one and a second planted in 2015.
Gorgona is born from this Vermentino and Ansonica vineyard, the result of the uniqueness of the place, the work of man and a symbol of hope and freedom.
GORGONA BIANCO 2020 - White Tuscan Coast IGT
The Gorgona label wants to be the “extraordinary edition” of the island, telling about a different aspect every year. Approaching Gorgona means discovering unique biodiversity, a thick Mediterranean scrub, the pristine sea, but also fortifications, witnesses of ancient civilizations and a small church built at the beginning of the eighteenth century by the Carthusians, dedicated to San Gorgonio.
The Gorgona 2020 label tells us about the fortress and the towers on the island. On the west coast, steep and jagged, rises the mighty "Torre Vecchia", an imposing Pisan manor or better defined "a fortress", covered with local stone, now in ruins, built between the 11th and 13th centuries which had the purpose of garrison the stretch of sea towards Corsica and defend the monks from frequent pirate raids. On the opposite side of the island, towards the mainland, there is the cala dello scalo, the fishermen's harbor dominated by the "Torre Nuova", a 17th century Medici fortification that completed the marine defense system. Finally, on the island there are also two reddish towers erected at the end of the nineteenth century to monitor movements on the mainland: at the edge of the pine forest, near the vineyards, the Clock Tower, whose name is inspired by the sundial placed on the side of the building and, towards Cala Scirocco, the Garibaldi Tower.
The 2020 season on the Gorgona island was characterized by a winter with frequent rains, but with never rigid temperatures, because they were constantly mitigated by the sea breezes. The vine began its vegetative cycle with the usual anticipation that characterizes the island, sprouting in the first week of March. A particularly pleasant spring, with mild and sunny days, favored the vegetative-productive development of the plants, accompanying them towards a summer that turned out to be slightly cooler than in previous years. Temperatures have been rising since the end of July, however the microclimate of the island, made unique by the presence of the sea, combined with isolated rainstorms, has allowed the clusters to arrive at the harvesting period in perfect physiological and sanitary conditions. An equally sunny but always breezy September, finally allowed the grapes to develop a good polyphenolic maturity, accompanied by an intense and elegant aromatic profile.
Gorgona 2020 expresses a great Mediterranean character, with all the warmth of the sun that kisses the island and the freshness of the sea breezes that constantly blow. His is a straw yellow color full of golden reflections. The bouquet is an elegant combination of Mediterranean, floral and fruity notes. The hints of Mediterranean scrub reminiscent of cistus, helichrysum, mastic and juniper combine with the broom and the memory of hawthorn. Among the fruity notes, there are evident hints of exotic fruits, such as abacaxì and maracuja but also the citrus notes of bergamot. On the palate, the flavor and freshness are wonderful, intertwined in a magical balance, even more accentuated by the initial softness and extreme elegance that accompanies throughout the tasting. Like all vintages, 2020 also manifests itself as a further sensational chapter in the history of Gorgona. Gorgona brings the one who tastes it to breathe and savor the stories that only this little big island can tell.
