It is a typical grapevine in the eastern area of the Veneto region and especially in the province of Treviso, and one of the few native varieties survived to the phylloxera invasion of the second half of the nineteenth century. The origin of its name, according to some people, is derived from the stream of the same name that flows between Valdobbiadene and Quartier del Piave, according to others it refers to the dialect word "rabiosa", which indicates a fruit of unpleasant flavour: in fact, it is aparticularly harsh grape, even when in full ripening, especially in the Piave variety. The Veronese variety is sweeter instead. Although it has a limited distribution because of its abrupt and not very easy to drink character, this variety has a long history in its territory and probably was already cultivated in the twelfth century by the monks of Sant'Andrea in Busco in Ponte di Piave.
