It is a vineyard present on the slopes of Etna since immemorial time. It seems that the wine with which Ulysses got the cyclops Polyphemus drunk - Homer in the Odyssey tells us - contained also these grapes. In more recent times Domenico Sestini describes Nerello Mascalese in his analysis about the wines of the Plains of Mascali (on the southern slopes of the volcano, in the territory that extends to the coast), where he includes it in the group of Nigrelli varieties. It is grown traditionally in small trees, and this variety is the most widespread in the province of Catania and nost of all the vineyards of Etna, where it is grown at 1000-1200 meters. Nerello Mascalese is characterized by large pentagonal leaves and long pyramidal bunches, with grapes of the characteristic oblong shape and pruinose skin, thick and consistent.
