The origins of this grape variety on the island are ancient and somewhat uncertain. The curious name comes from the fact that the abundant leaves envelop the bunches as hoods, impeding the view but especially avoiding the sun's rays hit directly the berries. The spread is limited to the provinces of Catania and Messina and this variety is hardly vinified alone, it is processed with other species of the area. Its plant has force do medium vigor, with medium-large and wedge-shaped leaves, medium, cylindrical or conical, compact bunches and spherical berries, with robust and waxy skin.
