The origin of this variety is uncertain and there are two different versions about the origin of its name. It might come from Spain or from the Marche region (given the similarity with the Montonico of the Ascoli area). In any case, it is likely that its local interpretation depends on the local Bolognese dialect word molt, which means "a lot of grapes". It is a variety known for its resistance to diseases and for its vigor and is grown almost exclusively in the province of Bologna and in part within that of Modena, areas along the river Rhine.
