it is the most important native vine of Lombardy and seems to have origins in the area of Lake Garda. Its presence in the territory is officially attested from the middle of 1500, Latin authors such as Pliny and Virgil had already written about it in their works. There are two varieties: Groppello Gentile, mainly used for rosé, and Groppello of Mocasina, which gives more structured and intense wines. Its name comes from grop (which in local dialect means node) and refers to the particular compactness of the clusters of the vine. Today Groppello is cultivated mainly in Lombardy (in the provinces of Brescia and Bergamo), in Veneto (Vicenza, Verona and Treviso), and in Trentino.
