The name Glera has replaced that of Prosecco with a Ministerial Decree of 2009. The operation was intended to protect the designation of origin, since, until the term Prosecco indicated a grape and not a production area, any type of protection resulted to be ineffective (just think of what happened in the case of Tocai, that in Hungary indicated a denomination and in Friuli a grape). The origin of this grape is uncertain: it may come from the Prosecco wine area, in the province of Trieste, where it was known under the name of Glera, and from there it extended to the area of the Euganean Hills, where instead took on the name Serpino. According to another tradition the reverse trip would have occurred, from Veneto to Friuli. Currently, the production area is located on the left side of the Piave river, between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, and different biotypes are known: Prosecco tondo, Prosecco lungo, Prosecco Balbi and Prosecco dal peccol rosso. The Glera vine is considered a "semi-aromatic" vine: the aromas of the grapes are reproduced within the wine in a clear way, but not as marked as in the "aromatic" vineyards (Moscato, Brachetto, Malvasia and Traminer).
