The first news of this grape variety date from the beginning of the sixteenth century, but became more frequent after the mid-nineteenth century, when the Freisa starts to be distinguished because of its hability to resist mildew and becomes one of the most popular varieties in the Turin and Astigiano areas. Nowadays it is grown mainly in the areas of Asti, Monferrato, Chieri, Alba and, to a lesser extent, on the hills of Pinerolo.
