The earliest records relating to this grape variety date from the late nineteenth century, when its spread was facilitated by the incredible resistance to powdery mildew disease, which at that time was ravaging the vineyards of Piedmont. Widespread mainly in the Novara and Vercelli area, Croatina is present, with the most common name of Bonarda, even in some areas of the provinces of Turin, Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo. It is a vine characterized by moderate acidity, ideal characteristic for dry, soft, vinous and with hints of red fruit wines, to be preferably consumed young. This type of grape is vinified often with other varieties such as Barbera, Vespolina, Uva Rara and Ughetta.
