A variety typical of central Tuscany, which takes its name from its characteristic color and its aroma of cherry. It was probably brought to Italy in around 1870 by a group of pilgrims returning from Santiago de Compostela and this would be the reason why the grape is also called "Ciliegiolo di Spagna". In Liguria it is especially prevalent in the central-eastern area, in Goldo of Tigullio and in Colli di Luni. It is a grape variety which gives not too much alcoholic and structured products, of cherry and ruby red color, with vinous aroma of red berries and a dry and fruity flavour.
