This variety has been present on the island since ancient times in Sicily. Famous authors talk about it, such as Cupani, in 1696, Sestini, in 1760, and Bruno Pastena in his "Guide to the Wines of Sicily", in 1970, which identifies four sub-types of the vine which differ in the shape of the bunches: Comune (o Latino), Lucido Spargolo, Lucido Serrato e Lucidissimo (o Extralucido). Currently the two types recognized on the island are the Cataratto Bianco Lucido, the most widespread, a vine of medium-large, pentagonal, three or five-lobed leaves, medium, conical or pyramidal, compact and generally winged bunches, medium-sized and spheroidal grapes.
