It is a grape grown in Sicily since immemorial times. Originally it was widesperad all over the island, but now its area of choice is limited to the territory of Etna. The name derives from the dialect word "caricare"(load): this in fact it always been a very productive variety, and literally filled the arms and baskets of the workers who brought it to the valley from the slopes of the volcano. It has been vinified in blending with other white grapes of the island for a long time, but in recent years we have realized the potential of its high quality and there are many prdoucers of the Etna area -especially organic and biodynamic producers- who started to work it in purity obtaining, in the best cases, excellent results and wines with notes that remind of Alsatian Riesling. The plant has medium, conical, medium sparse leaves and tends to compact, with medium-sized, spheroidal and with consistent skin grapes.
