The origin of this grape variety can not be dated with certainty, although it is sure that its name comes from the Lancelotti family of Modena, who favored its spread between 1300 and 1400. It belonds to the family of Lambrusco grape and is widespread especially in the territory of Reggio Emilia, although it is also present in the neighboring provinces. This variety has medium-size, pyramidal and rather scattered clusters, while the berries are small, with waxy skin, quite thick and consistent of blue-black color.
