Despite the global crisis of fine wines (Liv-ex 100 at -9.2%, Liv-ex 1000 at -9.6% and Fine Wine 50 at -12.5% in 2024), Italy is holding up better than anyone else (-4.1%). In the Liv-ex Power 100 index, Gaja and Tenuta San Guido stand out, in 2nd and 3rd place, overtaking the big names of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Surprisingly, Vega Sicilia (Spain) dominates the ranking, leaving the French off the podium.

3. Ordinary wine passed off as Doc/Docg: 29 investigated in Sardinia

An operation conducted by the Carabinieri of Bonorva led to the closure of the investigations on 29 people accused of fraud in the wine sector. Charged crimes: commercial fraud, counterfeiting of denominations and ideological forgery.

6. Italian Sparkling Wines on the Rise: “50 Great Sparkling Wines of the World” 2025

In the context of a difficult wine market, Italian sparkling wines shine. Freshness, lightness, lower alcohol content and a festive aura drive the tricolor bubbles both in Italy and abroad. The Italian sparkling wine segment (Prosecco, Franciacorta, Alta Langa, Trentodoc, Oltrepò, and new projects such as Garda Doc) conquers international palates and consolidates exports, growing by 8.4% in the first 8 months of 2024.

7. Wine e-commerce in trouble

After the pandemic-induced boom in 2020 and an excellent 2021, wine e-commerce is experiencing a setback. Consumers, held back by economic uncertainty, are choosing less red wine online, favoring whites, rosés, and Italian bubbles. The uncertain scenario is reflected in digital sales, which must address new strategies to intercept changes in taste.

8. Fraud in Sardinian wine: ordinary wine sold as Doc/Docg

The second case in Sardinia shows how crime exploits the appeal of prestigious denominations. A hard blow to the reputation of regional wines and a warning about the importance of controls.

9. Lollobrigida: “Italians live long lives also thanks to wine”

On the sidelines of the Agrifish Council, Minister Lollobrigida recalls how Italy, a nation of moderate wine consumers, is among the longest-lived countries in the world. A “cultural and conscious” consumption of Bacchus’ drink is the key: far from excess, wine is part of the Mediterranean food model.

10. Piero Antinori: “Wine crisis? We have overcome many”

The noble father of the Italian wine renaissance calls for optimism. Piero Antinori argues that the sector has gone through many phases of crisis, always overcoming them. Reducing vineyards is not the solution: better to invest in promotion abroad and conquer new markets. Italian wine has shown resilience and can do so again.

11. Etna of wine: between history and pioneers

The success of Etna wines is not a coincidence. Behind the current fame of the territory, there are far-sighted entrepreneurs and vignerons, such as Silvia Maestrelli, who believed in Etna when its viticulture was considered inconvenient.
