Growth of Barbera d'Asti DOCG Superiore, new initiatives to make the Barbera grape variety capable of conquering an ever wider audience

The Barbera d'Asti e Vini del Monferrato Consortium concludes 2024 with highly significant results , consolidating the position of its 14 denominations on national and international markets thanks to targeted strategies and innovative projects .

Among the most significant achievements, the performance of Barbera d'Asti DOCG Superiore stands out, with an increase of over 200 thousand bottles produced compared to the previous year. This result highlights the versatility of the denomination, capable of conquering an increasingly diversified public, from consumers who appreciate accessible and convivial wines, to those looking for a more intense and structured experience.

“We have worked to make Barbera d'Asti and the wines of Monferrato increasingly accessible and loved, focusing on quality, authenticity and effective communication,” said Vitaliano Maccario , President of the Consortium. “In 2025 we will continue on this path, with particular attention to events and collaborations that make Barbera d'Asti an increasingly 'pop' wine and closer to consumers around the world. We are working hard for the second Barbera D'Asti Wine Festival, which aims to promote the Monferrato denominations in its territory and bring it ever closer not only to the consumer but also by highlighting our producers who, every day, work hard to make this wine and Monferrato known throughout the world.”

This enthusiasm finds strength in the main denominations of the territory, among which the excellent results for the Monferrato DOC Nebbiolo stand out, which grows by 11% reaching over 500 thousand bottles . The data confirms the ability of Monferrato to valorize this vine, making it increasingly competitive in the Piedmont panorama and beyond.

Among the larger denominations, the Piemonte DOC , with an increase of 3%, is close to one million more bottles than the previous year. In particular, the Piemonte DOC Barbera maintains a solid position with over 16 million bottles (0.4%), while the Piemonte DOC Barbera Passito scores a surprising 19.36%, exceeding 1 million and 100 thousand bottles. Also noteworthy is the success of the double grape variety, a true innovation in the production specification, the Piemonte DOC Barbera-Nebbiolo , which records an exceptional 359% and exceeds 500 thousand bottles .

On the white front, Piemonte DOC Chardonnay marks an absolute record, with an increase of 7.6% and 2 million 174 thousand bottles produced , confirming its growing appeal among consumers. Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG remains stable above one million bottles (1.6%), while Terre Alfieri DOCG , although still with limited numbers, grows by 8%, a promising sign for the future.

These results reflect the success of the initiatives carried out in 2024, such as the first edition of the Barbera D'Asti Wine Festival , which celebrated the heart of Barbera with an innovative and engaging format. International events such as the Barbera d'Asti Fish Festival in Oslo and the Monferrato Identity in the Netherlands and Belgium have strengthened the presence of the Consortium's wines on foreign markets, while the consolidation of the presence in the United States and Canada has given further impetus to exports.

2025 will see the Consortium of Barbera d'Asti and Vini del Monferrato increasingly engaged in the promotion of the territory and its denominations through a series of events aimed at making Barbera d'Asti an accessible , youthful wine with multiple consumption opportunities .

Events such as the Barbera D'Asti Wine Festival, participation in trade fairs such as Vinitaly , in Verona from 6 to 9 April, and numerous other initiatives will be unique opportunities to get to know these extraordinary wines better.

A stimulating project that aims, also through innovative formats such as experiential events in Italy and abroad, social campaigns, local events, workshops, to bring young people closer to the wine culture of Monferrato with a fresh and inclusive approach, making Barbera d'Asti a contemporary symbol of quality, tradition and fun.
