The WINE Market in AUSTRIA Report 2025 The market share of foreign wines, imported, in Austria is around 25%. A significant share of imports, around 36% in terms of value, concerns sparkling wines, followed by red wines and white wines last. The first country from which wines are imported is Italy, with a share of the total import of 44% in value. Italy's leading role is due both to its geographical proximity and to the presence of numerous restaurants serving Italian cuisine. As regards commercial channels, the Horeca sector is very important because, since Austria is a destination for important tourist flows, with over 37 million visitors per year, there are a significant number of hotels, restaurants, clubs, wine shops, etc. in the country. An important role in the sale of wine is also played by the Heuriger, or cellars or agritourisms of the producers who sell their wines directly to the public without commercial intermediaries. The Austrian wine market is a mature, sophisticated and essentially saturated market, where it faces competition from local wines as well as French, German, Spanish and, in recent years, American, Chilean and Australian wines. However, high income levels allow a significant portion of consumers to orient themselves towards higher quality products and the growing appreciation that wine is experiencing also among young people, gives hope for the possibility of further positive developments, at least for the higher quality wines.
