It is the quality that a wine that shows clearly and precisely the aromas and flavours that are typical of the variety of grapes from which it is produced. A wine made with Merlot, for example, will be typically medium–bodied, with an average alcohol level, moderate acidity and a taste of red fruits such as currants, strawberry and raspberry. If a wine does not show clearly these features, then we say it has not a varietal character.
