Filtering is an operation that, like clarification, aims to remove suspended matter from wine; filtration is completely mechanical, and consists of passing the turbid liquid through a porous wall that retains the unwanted solid elements. It does not replace clarification but favours and completes it (Veronelli). Some winemakers complain that this method takes away character and flavour to wine.
